Welcome
to January 2010 'News of
Hope'!
As
we start the New Year - and the
new DECADE - it seemed time for
a good metaphor to help direct
us towards a hopeful future.
I have daily readings in various
spiritual books that I rely on
to adjust my attitude - help me
rise above fear of the future
and into hope for today; help me
counteract the human degradation
portrayed in daily news media
and find the good and wholesome
that is out there. And I look to
the simple and amazing right
outside the door in my backyard
- to nature! And look what I
found ...
Thanks to the gift of southern
California's mediterranean
winter, 6 teeny tiny 1/2"
Monarch butterfly caterpillars
were clinging to my weedy
looking butterfly bush this
week. They are adorned in
brilliant yellow and black
bands. And they are surprisingly
busy and fast for fat baby worms
- eating voraciously and
wiggling about seeking ever more
nourishment as they work on
becoming whatever they are meant
to be.
Do you think they KNOW they will
be gorgeous monarch butterflies
in a few weeks to come? I don't
think so. I think they likely
have NO knowledge they will be
BEAUTIFUL They probably don't
have any idea they are in the
process of renewal and rebirth
- and how many times do I not
know it, too? But WE ALL ARE!
In this new year, despite
whatever challenges confront our
path, go voraciously towards
your future, for you, too, have
a destiny with unknown beauty -
within yourself, your
relationships, your hopes and
your dreams!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

SHOULD
MARIJUANA BE
LEGALIZED?
The legalization
of marijuana is
in great debate
at this time all
across the US.
We encourage you
to learn all you
can about the
pros and cons
and evaluate
your stance on
the issue. The
next two
articles are
intended for
informational
purposes and do
not intend to
express our
opinion here at
LEGACY.
You are welcome
to post your
thoughts on our
blog.
We pose the
following
questions:
Tobacco use has
proven to have a
very significant
negative health
impact on
individuals and
health care
costs in the US.
How does the
fact that
tobacco is legal
promote it's
use?
Because it is
legal, it was
heavily
advertised for
years, touting
the positive
return from
smoking tobacco
with images that
increased
tobacco's appeal
to youth and
adults.
Significant
prevention
education
coupled with
restrictions on
advertising and
media
recognition of
the health
hazards has
shown to create
awareness and
act as a
deterrent in
youth.
What will be the
corporate
promotion of
marijuana if
legalized?
What will be the
media message?
What
restrictions
will there be?
What prevention
messages will
need to be
implemented?
NOTE: Research
results reported
on Jan 1, 2010
stated :
About 70
percent of 12-
to 17-year-olds
see great risk
in smoking a
pack of
cigarettes or
more daily,
compared to 40
percent who saw
great risk in
binge drinking
and about 34
percent who
perceived great
risk in smoking
marijuana
monthly,
according to
research from
the Substance
Abuse and Mental
Health Services
Administration (SAMHSA).
Researchers said
that while risk
perception was
relatively
constant across
age groups when
it come to
smoking, it
varied more
widely in
regards to other
substances.
"We are on
the right track
with cigarette
smoking and need
to keep raising
awareness among
teens about the
dangers of other
substances,"
said SAMHSA
administrator
Pamela S. Hyde.
"Understanding
that perception
of harm is a
strong predictor
of potential
substance use
among young
people can help
guide the
development of
substance
prevention
messages."

1: Daily
Marijuana Use
Could Cause
Permanent Brain
Damage
This article was
released on
January 7, 2010:
Animal
studies show
that daily
marijuana use
could
permanently
alter serotonin
and
norepinephrine
levels in the
brain, raising
the risk of
depression and
anxiety,
according to
researcher
Gabriella Gobbi
of McGill
University.
The Canadian
Press reported
Dec. 17 that
Gobbi studied
the brain
chemistry of 18
adolescent lab
rats exposed
daily to
marijuana and
found that they
had decreased
levels of
mood-controlling
serotonin and
higher levels of
the stress
hormone
norepinephrine.
Gobbi said that
the effects were
magnified
because the
adolescent brain
is still
developing.
"These
permanent
changes in the
brain are also
linked to
certain mental
illnesses, like
schizophrenia,"
she said.
"And we
showed that even
if we stopped
the cannabis use
at the end of
adolescence, the
changes were
still detectable
in
adulthood."
A future study
will concentrate
on adolescent
marijuana use
among humans.
The study was
published in the
journal
Neurobiology of
Disease.See

2: Should
California
Legalize
Marijuana?
Posted on Care2
by Kayla Coleman
Jan. 8, 2010 -
This article
leans strongly
in the direction
of promoting
legalization. It
presents many of
the current
pro-legalization
arguments.
This article
does not
expressly
represent the
opinions of
LEGACY. It is
intended to
provide current
information on
the issue for
your
consideration:
An upcoming
bill could make
marijuana legal
in California.
Could
Californians be
coming home
after work and
rolling a joint
instead of
cracking a beer?
If passed, the
bill, A.B. 390,
would cause
marijuana to be
regulated
similarly to
alcohol. If
you're over 21,
it's okay to
smoke, and you
can grow up to
10 plants as
long as they're
not visible to
the public. It
still won't be
legal to possess
or sell
marijuana on
school grounds,
and of course,
won't be legal
to sell to
people under 21.
The bill would
also legalize
the cultivation
of industrial
hemp, a very
environmentally
sustainable and
versatile crop
that can be used
in cloth, paper,
pains, plastics,
food, fuel,
cosmetics, and
many other
useful products.
Marijuana has
been used for
centuries as a
healing herb.
Today, medical
marijuana is
helping people
cope with AIDS,
cancer, nausea,
multiple
sclerosis,
epilepsy,
Crohn's disease,
migraines,
glaucoma, and a
number of other
illnesses. Many
people think
marijuana is
mainly used to
treat serious
diseases, but in
California, 40
percent of
medical
marijuana is
used to ease
"chronic
pain".
Marijuana is
also prescribed
for help with
depression and
as an appetite
stimulant--it
seems like more
and more people
are finding help
for their
ailments with
marijuana, why
not make it
legal and spare
people the trip
to the doctor?
Some worry that
making marijuana
legal will lead
to increase use
by teens, but
countries that
have already
legalized
marijuana, like
the Netherlands
and Switzerland,
actually have
lower rates of
adolescent
marijuana use
than the U.S.
It's possible
that if we took
away the cacheข
naughtiness of
smoking pot,
fewer kids would
be inclined to
do it.
Although,
according to the
U.S. Drug
Enforcement
Administration
(the DEA),
Alaska tried
legalizing
marijuana in the
1970's and it
led to their
teens using it
at more than
twice the rate
of other
American teens.
Was this because
the weed was
finally legal?
The bottom line
in this debate
might be that
legalizing
marijuana could
save California
from debt. It
costs the state
$170 million a
year to arrest,
prosecute, and
incarcerate
people on
marijuana
charges.
According to
retired
California judge
James P. Gray,
marijuana
prohibition,
"doesn't
make pot less
available, but
it does clog the
court
system".
Marijuana sales
would also bring
in taxes, at the
rate of about a
dollar per
joint.
